Odisea are pleased to announce that Peter “Plukky” Lukursky has chosen the ODC48 to complete the incredible challenge of sailing around the work without the use of hydrocarbons and in doing so, follow the path set by Juan Sebastian ElCano who was the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe over 500 years ago.
Peter explained “to sail around the world without a diesel engine, attaching yourself to a marina’s power supply or using propane to cook is incredibly difficult but the technology is at a stage where with careful planning, it is possible. To give us the best chance of success, we needed a vessel that can perform in all conditions which would reduce the need to turn on the engines. We are also going to face adverse conditions on our journey, so the ability to limit our time at sea, sail up rivers to avoid hurricanes, and be strong enough to absorb some impacts are also vitally important. I felt that the strong structure and safety feature of the ODC48 offer the perfect combination for this challenge”
The ElCano challenge was conceived by the famous sailor Jimmy Cornell who attempted the feat in 2020 only to have to turn around after 3 weeks when he realized that he would not be able to complete it.
Peter is uniquely placed to take up the challenge having survived a sinking off the remote Western Australian coast, being hit by lightning in the middle of the night and having to jump into shark infested waters to rescue his sinking boat or living off the land for 70 days when all nations rejected his entry at the start of the CoVid panic.
Juan Sebastian Elcano was a Spanish navigator who took command of the Magellan fleet to complete the circumnavigation after the later was killed in the Philippines in 1521.
